Behavior Patterns

Larvae are typically found in dark, undisturbed areas. They are slow-moving and prefer to feed on natural fibers. They undergo several molts before pupating. Adults are often found near windows as they are attracted to light.

Risks & Benefits

Potential risks include damage to clothing, carpets, upholstery, and stored goods made of natural fibers. They can also cause skin irritation in some sensitive individuals (dermestid beetle dermatitis). They do not bite or transmit diseases. No significant benefits in a household setting, but some species are used in forensic entomology.
