Case-bearing Clothes Moth Larva (empty case or exuviae)

Natural Habitat

Indoors, particularly in dark, undisturbed areas such as closets, attics, storage chests, and under furniture. They prefer natural fibers.

Diet & Feeding

The larvae feed on natural fibers, including wool, silk, fur, feathers, felt, and other animal products. They can also consume synthetic blends if natural fibers are present.

Behavior Patterns

The larva builds a silk case that it carries with it and enlarges as it grows. This case is often camouflaged with bits of the material it is eating, making it difficult to spot. They are generally slow-moving and prefer dark, secluded areas. The presence of these cases (empty or with larvae inside) is a primary indicator of an infestation.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include significant damage to textiles, clothing, carpets, and other items made of natural fibers, leading to economic loss. They do not pose direct health risks to humans. There are no known direct benefits to humans, and they are generally considered a pest.
