Natural Habitat
High humidity environments, kitchens, pantries, and damp areas where mold or fungi grow.
Diet & Feeding
Mostly feeds on molds, fungi, and high-protein/fatty decaying organic matter like grains, cheese, or dried meats.
Behavior Patterns
They congregate in large numbers where food and moisture are present. They have a rapid life cycle, maturing from egg to adult in about 2-3 weeks under ideal damp conditions.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or sting but can cause allergic reactions ('grocer's itch') in sensitive individuals. They can contaminate food stores and serve as an indicator of high humidity or underlying mold issues in the home.
