Natural Habitat

Warm, humid indoor environments such as bathrooms, basements, attics, kitchens, and laundry rooms. They prefer dark cracks and crevices.

Diet & Feeding

Carbohydrates and proteins; primarily feeds on paper, book bindings, glue, wallpaper paste, clothing (silk, cotton, linen), dandruff, and dry food items like flour or oats.

Behavior Patterns

They are nocturnal and move quickly in a fish-like wiggling motion (hence the name). They are shy of light and can survive for long periods without food. They molt throughout their adult lives.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Harmless to humans (they do not bite or spread disease) but are considered a nuisance pest because they can damage property like books, wallpaper, and clothing. Benefits: Minimal, though they contribute slightly to decomposition.
