Diet & Feeding

Feeds on natural fibers and dried animal products containing keratin or chitin. This includes wool, silk, fur, feathers, leather, dried meat, dead insects, and pet food.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae are typically slow-moving and prefer dark, undisturbed areas. They shed their skins multiple times as they grow, and these shed skins can often be found along with fecal pellets. Adults are often found near windows as they are attracted to light to fly outdoors and feed on pollen and nectar.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include significant damage to household items like carpets, clothing, upholstered furniture, and stored food. They do not bite or transmit diseases. Benefits are limited in a household setting, but in nature, they play a role as scavengers, breaking down organic matter.
