Mold Mites / Grain Mites
Scientific Name: Acarus spp.
Order & Family: Order: Sarcoptiformes (Astigmata), Family: Acaridae
Size: Minute, typically 0.2-0.5 mm (barely visible to the naked eye as tiny, moving white specks).

Natural Habitat
Damp, humid environments with high concentrations of fungi/mold and organic matter. Commonly found in stored food products (grains, cereals, dried fruits, cheese), pet food, insect cultures (often as pests), and sometimes in damp indoor environments like bathrooms or basements.
Diet & Feeding
Primarily feed on fungi, molds, and decomposing organic matter. They are especially attracted to high-moisture content foodstuffs where mold can grow.
Behavior Patterns
They thrive in high humidity (above 65% RH) and moderate temperatures. They reproduce rapidly under favorable conditions, leading to large populations. Mites are often seen as 'walking dust' or 'flour dust' when present in large numbers in infested products. Sensitive to dryness, they will die if humidity drops below 60%.
Risks & Benefits
Potential risks include: Contamination of stored food products, rendering them inedible or causing spoilage; potential irritants for individuals with allergies or asthma, as their bodies and feces can be allergenic; can be a nuisance pest in homes. No known direct benefits to humans or ecosystems, typically considered a pest.
