Grain Weevil

Scientific Name: Sitophilus granarius

Order & Family: Coleoptera, Curculionidae

Size: 2.5-5.0 mm

Grain Weevil

Natural Habitat

Grain storage facilities, pantries, and anywhere dried grains (wheat, corn, rice, barley, oats, etc.) are stored.

Diet & Feeding

Adults and larvae feed exclusively on whole grains. The female chews a hole in a grain kernel, lays an egg inside, and seals it. The larva develops inside the kernel, consuming it from the inside out.

Behavior Patterns

Flightless, but can be dispersed through infested grain. They are often found in stored products and are highly destructive pests. They are less cold-tolerant than some other stored product pests.

Risks & Benefits

Significant economic risk to agriculture due to destruction of stored grain. They cause substantial weight loss, contamination, and reduced germination of seeds. No known benefits, considered a pure pest.
