Bird Louse (or Chewing Louse)
Scientific Name: Mallophaga (Order: Phthiraptera)
Order & Family: Order: Phthiraptera, Suborder: Mallophaga (sometimes classified as Ischnocera or Amblycera)
Size: Very small; typically 1-4 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Found exclusively on the feathers or skin of birds (and rarely on mammals); often spotted crawling on surfaces near bird nests or entry points like windowsills.
Diet & Feeding
Feeds on feathers, dead skin, blood, and skin secretions of their host animal.
Behavior Patterns
They are ectoparasites that spend their entire life cycle on the host. If separated from the host, they will wander aimlessly seeking a new one but survive only a short time (a few days) without a host.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Can cause irritation, feather loss, and restlessness in birds; generally considered harmless biting pests to humans but may bite if they land on skin, causing temporary itching. Benefits: In the wild, they may play a niche role in ecosystem parasite dynamics, though generally pestilent.
