Portuguese Millipede
Scientific Name: Ommatoiulus moreletii
Order & Family: Order: Julida, Family: Julidae
Size: 20 mm to 45 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Typically found in moist environments, hiding under rocks, logs, or leaf litter. In urban areas, they often invade gardens, greenhouses, and homes, particularly during wet weather in autumn and spring.
Diet & Feeding
Detritivores; they primarily feed on decaying plant matter, fungi, and occasionally seek out seedlings or soft parts of living plants.
Behavior Patterns
They are nocturnal and become highly active after autumn rains. When disturbed, they coil into a tight flat spiral. They are known to invade houses in large numbers attracted by light.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans (no bite or sting). However, they can secrete a pungent yellowish fluid when handled that may stain skin or clothes and irritate eyes. They can be a nuisance pest in homes and gardens due to sheer numbers.
