Bird Mite

Natural Habitat

Found in bird nests, poultry houses, and occasionally in mammalian living spaces and human homes.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate blood-feeders, primarily consuming the blood of birds such as pigeons, starlings, or chickens.

Behavior Patterns

They are semi-permanent parasites that leave the host after feeding. If their avian host leaves or dies, they migrate in large numbers into buildings seeking an alternative host.

Risks & Benefits

While they cannot survive solely on human blood or complete their life cycle on humans, they can cause intense itching, dermatitis, and skin irritation from bites. They are considered an indoor pest and have no ecosystem benefits in a domestic setting.
