Natural Habitat

Strictly hematophagous (blood-eaters), primarily feeding on human blood but can also feed on other warm-blooded animals.

Behavior Patterns

Mainly nocturnal, emerging at night to feed by piercing the skin with their proboscis. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult stages) and can survive for months without a blood meal.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include itchy skin welts, allergic reactions, insomnia, and secondary skin infections from scratching. They are not known to transmit diseases to humans but represent a significant pest nuisance and economic burden.
