Silverfish
Scientific Name: Lepisma saccharina
Order & Family: Order: Zygentoma, Family: Lepismatidae
Size: Typically 10-19 mm (0.4-0.75 inches) long, excluding their caudal filaments.

Natural Habitat
Silverfish thrive in high humidity and moderate temperatures. Common habitats include basements, bathrooms, kitchens, attics, and cluttered areas like bookshelves and closets. They can be found in residential homes and commercial buildings around the world.
Diet & Feeding
Silverfish are omnivores, primarily feeding on carbohydrates. Their diet includes starches, cellulose, sugars, and proteins. They are known to consume paper, glue, books, photographs, fabrics (especially cotton, linen, silk, and synthetic fibers), dried foods, and even dead insects.
Behavior Patterns
Silverfish are nocturnal and highly secretive, preferring dark, cool, and damp environments. They are fast runners and can be difficult to catch. They undergo ametabolous metamorphosis, meaning they continue to molt throughout their lives, even as adults. Their lifespan can range from 2 to 8 years.
Risks & Benefits
Potential risks include property damage due to their feeding habits on paper, books, and clothing. They can contaminate food stores. They are not known to transmit diseases or bite humans. Benefits are negligible in an urban setting; in natural ecosystems, they contribute to decomposition.
