Small Milkweed Bug
Scientific Name: Lygaeus kalmii
Order & Family: Hemiptera (True Bugs), Family: Lygaeidae (Seed Bugs)
Size: Approximately 10-12 mm (0.4-0.5 inches) in length.

Natural Habitat
Found in areas where milkweed plants grow, including meadows, fields, roadsides, gardens, and open woodlands.
Diet & Feeding
Primarily feed on the seeds of milkweed plants (Asclepias spp.). They use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract fluids from the seeds.
Behavior Patterns
They are often found in groups on milkweed plants. They are most active during warmer parts of the day and can be seen feeding on milkweed seeds, especially from late summer through autumn. Their bright coloration serves as a warning to predators (aposematism).
Risks & Benefits
They are generally considered harmless to humans. While they feed on milkweed seeds, their impact on milkweed populations is typically minor and not considered a significant agricultural pest. They are part of the milkweed ecosystem and can serve as a food source for some insectivorous predators (those tolerant of milkweed toxins).
