Silverfish

Natural Habitat

Damp, dark, and secluded areas such as bathrooms, basements, attics, kitchens, and closets. They prefer temperatures between 70-80°F (21-27°C) and high humidity (75-95% RH).

Diet & Feeding

Polyphagous, feeding on carbohydrates, especially polysaccharides. Common food sources include paper (books, wallpaper, cardboard), glue, textiles (cotton, linen, silk), dried foods (oats, flour, sugar), and even their own shed exoskeletons.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and highly secretive, avoiding light. They are fast-moving when disturbed. They undergo ametabolous metamorphosis, meaning they continue to molt throughout their lifespan (which can be 2-8 years) even after reaching adulthood. They can survive for long periods without food if water is available.

Risks & Benefits

Potential risks include damage to household items such as books, documents, clothing, and food products. They are not known to transmit diseases to humans or animals, nor do they bite. They are generally considered a nuisance pest rather than a health risk. There are no significant known benefits to humans or the ecosystem.
