Scientific Name: Tenebrio molitor

Mealworm (larva of the mealworm beetle)

Natural Habitat

Found in dark, damp, and undisturbed places, often associated with stored grains, flour, and other dry foodstuffs. Also found under logs, rocks, and in leaf litter.

Diet & Feeding

Primarily detritivores, feeding on decaying plant material, grains, flour, bread, cereals, and other organic matter. They can also consume fruits and vegetables.

Behavior Patterns

Mealworms are the larval stage of mealworm beetles. They are nocturnal and tend to burrow into their food source or substrate. They undergo several molts as they grow, eventually pupating and then emerging as adult beetles. The entire life cycle usually takes a few months, depending on temperature and food availability.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Can be considered a pest in stored food products, potentially contaminating grains and flour. Benefits: Widely used as a food source for pets (birds, reptiles, fish) and livestock, and are being explored as a sustainable protein source for human consumption. They are also used in scientific research and for breaking down plastics like polystyrene due to their gut microbes.
