Order & Family: Amphipoda: Talitridae

Size: 6 - 12 mm (0.2 - 0.5 inches)

Lawn Prawn (or Land Amphipod)

Natural Habitat

Damp environments rich in leaf litter, mulch, and decaying organic matter; commonly found in gardens, forest floors, and near human habitation after rains.

Diet & Feeding

Detritivorous; they feed on decaying plant matter, leaf litter, and soft organic debris.

Behavior Patterns

These terrestrial crustaceans are nocturnal and require moisture to survive. They are often seen jumping erratically when disturbed or exposed, which explains their nickname. They dry out and die quickly (turning a distinctive pink/orange color) if they wander onto dry surfaces like patios or indoor floors.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans and pets (no biting or stinging). They are beneficial to the ecosystem as decomposers that help break down organic material and enrich the soil.
