Earwig

Natural Habitat

Damp, dark places outdoors such as under rocks, logs, leaf litter, and mulch. Indoors, they can be found in basements, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.

Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous, feeding on decaying organic matter, molds, fungi, plants (leaves, flowers, fruits), and small insects like aphids and mites. Some species are predatory.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal; they hide during the day and forage at night. They are known for their parental care, with females guarding their eggs and nymphs. They use their cerci (pincers) for defense, capturing prey, and folding their wings.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans; the pincers can give a minor pinch but rarely break the skin. Can be a nuisance pest if found in large numbers indoors or if they feed on garden plants. They can be beneficial by preying on other garden pests like aphids.
