Springtail
Scientific Name: Collembola (subclass)
Order & Family: Order: Entomobryomorpha (frequently seen elongated type); Family: Various (e.g., Isotomidae or Entomobryidae)
Size: Minute; typically 0.25 mm to 6 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Damp environments rich in organic matter, such as leaf litter, decaying wood, soil, fungi, and frequently found floating in large numbers on the surface of swimming pools.
Diet & Feeding
Mostly detritivores and fungivores; they feed on decaying plant material, mold, fungus, algae, and microscopic bacteria.
Behavior Patterns
They are named for their furcula (forked tail-like appendage) which allows them to jump distances many times their body length to escape threats. They often gather in huge aggregations, sometimes forming 'rafts' on pool surfaces.
Risks & Benefits
Benefits: Essential for composting and distinct soil health by breaking down organic matter. Risks: Harmless to humans and pets (they do not bite or sting); primarily considered a nuisance pest when they enter homes or mass in swimming pools.
