Case-bearing Clothes Moth
Scientific Name: Tinea pellionella
Order & Family: Lepidoptera, Tineidae
Size: Larvae can reach up to 1/2 inch (12-15 mm) in length. Adult moths are small, with a wingspan of about 1/2 inch (12-14 mm).

Natural Habitat
Indoors, especially dark and undisturbed areas where natural fibers are stored, such as closets, attics, and basements. They thrive in moderate temperatures and humidity.
Diet & Feeding
The larvae feed on natural fibers, including wool, fur, silk, feathers, felt, and other animal products. They are known to damage clothing, carpets, upholstery, and stored textiles.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae construct a portable silk case that they carry with them and enlarge as they grow. They are slow-moving and often retreat into their case when disturbed. Adults are poor fliers and tend to run or hop; they are attracted to light but prefer dark, undisturbed areas for mating and egg-laying. The life cycle can range from 2 months to 2 years, depending on environmental conditions and food availability.
Risks & Benefits
Potential risks include significant damage to natural fiber textiles, clothing, and upholstered furniture. They do not bite or transmit diseases. From an ecological perspective, they are detritivores, breaking down natural organic materials, but this benefit is offset by their pest status in human environments.
