Natural Habitat
High-humidity environments, organic matter, kitchens, bathrooms, pantry items, and areas with mold or fungal growth.
Diet & Feeding
Mycetophagous; they primarily feed on mold, fungi, yeasts, and high-protein/fat stored foods like seeds, nuts, cheese, and grains.
Behavior Patterns
They reproduce rapidly in humid conditions (>60% RH). They are known for 'swarming' behavior where thousands appear as a fine, moving white powder on surfaces.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or sting but can cause 'grocer's itch' (allergic dermatitis) or respiratory irritation in sensitive individuals. They are nuisance pests that indicate a moisture or mold problem.
