Mold Mite
Scientific Name: Tyrophagus putrescentiae
Order & Family: Sarcoptiformes / Acaridae
Size: 0.3 to 0.45 mm (nearly invisible to the naked eye without magnification)

Natural Habitat
Found in environments with high humidity and moisture, particularly in grain silos, food storage areas, kitchens, and bathrooms where mold growth is present.
Diet & Feeding
Primarily feeds on mold, fungi, and high-protein/fat organic materials like dried meats, cheese, grains, and seeds.
Behavior Patterns
They reproduce incredibly quickly in warm, damp conditions. While they are wingless and move slowly, they can be spread via air currents or by hitching rides on larger insects and clothing.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or sting humans, but their presence indicates a moisture/mold problem. They can cause skin irritation ('grocer's itch') and respiratory allergies or asthma flare-ups in sensitive individuals through contact or inhalation of their waste and shed skins.
