Pubic Louse (Crab Louse)

Size: 1.1 mm to 1.8 mm (about the size of a pinhead)

Natural Habitat
Typically found in coarse human body hair, most commonly in the pubic region, but can also inhabit eyelashes, eyebrows, chest hair, and armpits.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate ectoparasite; feeds exclusively on human blood several times a day.
Behavior Patterns
They are slow-moving and spend their entire life cycle on the host. They attach themselves to hair shafts and move between hosts primarily through close physical or sexual contact.
Risks & Benefits
Causes intense itching (pruritus) due to an allergic reaction to their saliva. While they do not transmit major diseases, secondary skin infections can occur from scratching. They provide no ecosystem benefits.
