Natural Habitat
Found indoors in dark, humid environments such as bathrooms, basements, attics, and kitchens. They often hide in cracks, crevices, or under objects.
Diet & Feeding
Feed on carbohydrates (starches and sugars), including paper, glue, book bindings, clothing (cotton, linen, silk), wallpaper paste, and dry food products.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal and elusive; they move quickly with a wiggling motion resembling a fish swimming. They molt throughout their lives and can survive long periods without food.
Risks & Benefits
Considered a nuisance pest rather than a health threat; they do not bite or spread disease. However, they can cause damage to household items like books, wallpaper, and clothing. Ecologically, they act as decomposers.
