Fruit Fly

Scientific Name: Drosophila melanogaster

Order & Family: Order: Diptera; Family: Drosophilidae

Size: 3 to 4 millimeters (approximately 1/8 inch) in length

Fruit Fly

Natural Habitat

Commonly found in residential kitchens, restaurants, and food processing facilities near fermenting organic matter like ripe fruit and vegetables.

Diet & Feeding

Primarily feeds on sugary, fermenting liquids found in overripe fruits, rotting vegetables, and yeast. They consume the microbes responsible for fermentation.

Behavior Patterns

They exhibit a very short life cycle (about 8–10 days) and are most active during the day. They are attracted to acetic acid (vinegar) and are known for their rapid hovering flight patterns and high reproductive rates.

Risks & Benefits

While they do not bite and are generally harmless to humans, they can act as vectors for bacteria and pathogens by transferring them from contaminated surfaces to fresh food. In science, they are highly beneficial as a primary model organism for genetics and biological research.
