Size: 2-5 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Found indoors in dark, undisturbed areas such as closets, under furniture, in carpet edges, and storage boxes. In nature, they inhabit bee, wasp, or bird nests.
Diet & Feeding
Scavengers that feed on natural fibers including wool, fur, silk, feathers, dead insects, pet dander, and dried plant products.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae avoid light and prefer dark corners. They are slow-moving and go through several molting stages, often leaving behind shed skins. Adults are attracted to light and are often found on windowsills.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Major household pest; larvae can cause significant damage to carpets, clothing, upholstery, and museum specimens. Some people experience allergic dermatitis ('carpet beetle dermatitis') from contact with the larva's bristly hairs. Benefits: In nature, they help break down dead organic matter.
