Carpet Beetle (larva)
Dermestidae (larva)
- Order & Family
- Coleoptera, Dermestidae
- Size
- 1-5 mm (.04 - .2 inches)
Natural Habitat
Indoors, especially in undisturbed areas where food sources (natural fibers, animal products) are present, such as carpets, rugs, furniture, closets, and attics.
Diet & Feeding
Keratin-based materials like wool, silk, fur, feathers, leather, dried animal products, and sometimes synthetic fibers if mixed with natural ones. They also feed on dead insects and food crumbs.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are the damaging stage, often found crawling in dark, undisturbed areas. They are negatively phototactic (avoid light) and will roll up or play dead when disturbed. Adults feed on pollen and nectar outdoors and are attracted to light, potentially laying eggs indoors.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Can cause significant damage to textiles, clothing, carpets, and museum specimens made of natural fibers. They do not bite or transmit diseases but can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Benefits: In nature, they act as scavengers, breaking down organic matter.
