Varied Carpet Beetle
Anthrenus verbasci
- Order & Family
- Order Coleoptera, Family Dermestidae
- Size
- 2mm to 4mm in length
Natural Habitat
Indoors, they are commonly found in carpets, upholstery, and stored fabrics. Outdoors, they inhabit blossoms and shrubs.
Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on pollen and nectar. Larvae feed on natural animal fibers like wool, silk, fur, feathers, and dead skin cells.
Behavior Patterns
They exhibit complete metamorphosis. Adults are attracted to light and are often found on windowsills, while larvae seek out dark, secluded areas to feed.
Risks & Benefits
They are considered a household pest as larvae can damage textiles and natural fibers. Larval hairs can cause 'carpet beetle dermatitis' (an itchy rash) in sensitive individuals. They do not bite humans.
