Fruit Fly Larva

Natural Habitat

Typically found near overripe, fermenting, or decaying fruits and vegetables, as well as in drains and garbage disposals.

Diet & Feeding

They feed on the yeast and bacteria found in fermenting organic matter and decaying fruit juices.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae emerge from eggs laid on organic matter and immediately begin tunneling and feeding. They undergo three molts before moving to a dry area to pupate.

Risks & Benefits

Generally considered a nuisance pest in homes. While they do not bite, they can potentially contaminate food with bacteria (such as E. coli or Salmonella) picked up from the decaying matter they inhabit.
