Varied Carpet Beetle
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Order: Coleoptera (Beetles), Family: Dermestidae (Skin Beetles)
Size: Typically 1.7 to 3.5 mm (roughly 1/16 to 1/8 inch) in length.

Natural Habitat
Commonly found indoors in homes, museums, and warehouses. Outdoors, they inhabit bird nests and bee hives. They prefer dark, undisturbed areas like closets, attics, and underneath furniture.
Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on pollen and nectar. The larvae (which cause the damage) feed on natural fibers, including wool, silk, fur, feathers, leather, and dead insects.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are attracted to light and often found on windowsills. The larvae prefer darkness and are elusive. The life cycle involves a complete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, adult), with the larval stage lasting much longer than the adult stage. The distinct mottled pattern on the adult's back is formed by tiny colored scales.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: The hairy larvae can cause allergic skin reactions (carpet beetle dermatitis) in some people. They are significant pests that cause damage to clothing, carpets, upholstery, and museum specimens. Benefits: In nature, they act as scavengers, breaking down dead animal matter.
