Natural Habitat

Human skin, specifically within the stratum corneum (top layer) where females burrow to lay eggs.

Diet & Feeding

They feed on skin cells and extracellular fluid found within the burrows they create in the host's skin.

Behavior Patterns

Mites are transmitted through direct, prolonged skin-to-skin contact. Females burrow into the skin to lay eggs, which hatch into larvae that move to the surface to mature and repeat the cycle.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include scabies, a highly contagious skin infestation characterized by intense itching and a pimple-like rash. Secondary bacterial infections can occur from scratching.
