Natural Habitat
Found indoors in homes, warehouses, and museums, often in dark, undisturbed areas such as under furniture, in closets, or within wall voids.
Diet & Feeding
Scavengers that feed on organic materials, particularly those of animal origin such as wool, fur, silk, feathers, dead insects, and pet hair.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are slow-moving and avoid light. They undergo several molts, leaving behind empty brownish skins. Infestations can spread through a building as larvae crawl from room to room searching for food.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Major household pest that can damage carpets, clothing, and upholstery. Their defensive hairs (setae) can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some people. Benefits: Not typically beneficial in human dwellings, but in nature, they help recycle organic matter.
