Dobsonfly (Female)

Natural Habitat

Near clean, moving freshwater streams and rivers where their aquatic larvae (hellgrammites) develop.

Diet & Feeding

Adults eat very little, sometimes consuming nectar or fruit juices; larvae (hellgrammites) are fierce predators of aquatic insects.

Nocturnal and attracted to bright lights. Adults have a short lifespan of only a few days to weeks focused on mating; they are weak fliers.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans but females can deliver a painful (though non-venomous) bite if handled. They are excellent ecological indicators of high water quality.
