Crane Fly

Natural Habitat

Moist environments, including wetlands, woodlands, and urban gardens. Often found near water sources or damp vegetation.

Diet & Feeding

Adults often do not eat and have a very short lifespan; those that do feed consume nectar or water. Larvae, known as 'leatherjackets', feed on decaying plant matter or the roots of grasses.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are often attracted to porch lights at night and may fly erratically indoors. They are weak fliers and have a temporary life stage focused entirely on reproduction.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans; they cannot bite or sting and do not eat mosquitoes (despite the nickname 'mosquito hawk'). They are a vital food source for birds, fish, and other wildlife. Some larvae can be minor pests to lawns.
