Natural Habitat

Attached to twigs, branches, fences, or exterior walls in gardens, meadows, and shrublands.

Diet & Feeding

The egg case itself does not eat; however, emerged nymphs are carnivorous, eating small insects like aphids, fruit flies, and other small soft-bodied invertebrates.

Behavior Patterns

The female produces a frothy secretion that hardens into a protective, papery foam to insulate eggs over winter. Nymphs emerge in spring (eclosing) all at once, often displaying cannibalistic behavior shortly after birth.

Risks & Benefits

Highly beneficial to the ecosystem and gardeners as a natural pest control agent. They pose no risk to humans and are generally welcomed as a sign of a healthy garden environment.
