Mold Mite

Natural Habitat

Damp environments with high humidity, focusing on materials with fungal or mold growth, such as stored foods, grain, and damp upholstery.

Diet & Feeding

Feed primarily on fungi (molds and yeasts), but can also consume high-protein and high-fat materials like grains, seeds, and cheese.

Behavior Patterns

They have a rapid life cycle, specially in warm, humid conditions. When food sources or environmental conditions deteriorate, they can go into a phoretic stage to hitch rides on other insects.

Risks & Benefits

They can be pests in food storage facilities and labs. They do not bite humans but can cause 'grocer's itch' (dermatitis) and respiratory allergies in sensitive individuals.
