Silverfish

Natural Habitat

Typically found in dark, damp environments such as basements, attics, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. They are often seen on carpets (as shown in the image), baseboards, and in books or storage boxes.

Diet & Feeding

They feed on carbohydrates, particularly sugars and starches. Common food sources include book bindings, carpet fibers, clothing, paper, wallpaper paste, dandruff, and food residue.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and elusive, silverfish move with a distinct wiggling, fish-like motion. They do not have wings but are fast runners. They are long-lived (can live up to 8 years) and can survive for months without food.

Risks & Benefits

They are considered household pests because they can damage property such as books, wallpaper, and textiles by eating them. While they do not bite humans or transmit diseases, their presence can trigger allergies in some people.
