Natural Habitat

Primarily indoors; they hide in cracks and crevices near sleeping areas, such as mattresses, box springs, headboards, and baseboards.

Diet & Feeding

Hematophagous; they feed exclusively on the blood of mammals, primarily humans.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and secretive; they hide during the day and emerge at night to feed. After feeding, they retreat to harborages where they digest, often leaving behind the rusty or black fecal matter seen in the image.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Bites can range from undetectable to painful, itchy welts; can cause allergic reactions, secondary infections from scratching, and significant psychological distress/insomnia. No distinct ecosystem benefits in human habitats.
