Bird Wing Fly (Drain Fly / Moth Fly)
Scientific Name: Psychodinae (subfamily)
Order & Family: Order: Diptera; Family: Psychodidae
Size: 1.5 to 5 mm (0.06 to 0.20 inches)

Natural Habitat
Damp environments rich in organic matter, such as drains, sewers, septic tanks, and damp compost.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the gelatinous film of organic sludge, bacteria, and fungi found in drains; adults primarily consume liquid carbohydrates like nectar and contaminated water.
Behavior Patterns
They are weak fliers that often crawl on walls. They are nocturnal and are frequently found resting on bathroom or kitchen tiles near water sources. They reproduce quickly in the slime layer of pipes.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or sting and are generally harmless to humans. However, because they emerge from sewage and drains, they can mechanically transport bacteria to food surfaces, posing a minor hygiene risk. In nature, they help decompose organic material.
