Natural Habitat
Found worldwide in human dwellings, typically nesting in cracks, crevices, bed frames, mattresses, and soft furniture near sleeping areas.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate hematophages; they feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animals, primarily humans.
Behavior Patterns
Primarily nocturnal insects that hide during the day and emerge at night to feed. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult) and require a blood meal to molt into each successive life stage.
Risks & Benefits
They are a significant public health pest. While not known to transmit diseases, their bites cause itchy welts, allergic reactions, and significant psychological distress and insomnia. They offer no ecosystem benefits in human environments and are difficult and expensive to eradicate.
