Natural Habitat

Damp, organic-rich environments such as household drains, sewage pipes, septic tanks, and wet compost.

Larvae eat decaying organic matter, bacteria, and microscopic algae found in sludge. Adults may feed on nectar or contaminated liquids but often do not feed during their short lifespan.

Behavior Patterns

Poor fliers that often crawl on surfaces; they are primarily nocturnal and are attracted to light. They lay eggs in the gelatinous film (biofilm) that forms inside drains.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting. However, they can potentially spread bacteria from contaminated drains to surfaces and are considered a common indoor nuisance pest.
