Pubic Louse (also known as Crab Louse)

Size: 1.1 mm to 1.8 mm (roughly the size of a pinhead)

Natural Habitat
The coarse hair of the human groin and pubic areas; occasionally found in eyelashes, eyebrows, armpits, or chest hair.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate ectoparasites that feed exclusively on human blood several times a day.
Behavior Patterns
They are relatively immobile once attached to a host. They grasp hair shafts with specialized claws and lay eggs (nits) near the base of the hair. They cannot jump or fly and are primarily transmitted through close physical contact.
Risks & Benefits
Causes intense itching (pediculosis pubis) due to an allergic reaction to saliva. While they do not transmit serious diseases, scratching can lead to secondary bacterial skin infections. Their presence is considered a medical condition requiring treatment.
