Case-bearing Clothes Moth (Larva/Pupa Case)
Scientific Name: Tinea pellionella
Order & Family: Lepidoptera (Order), Tineidae (Family)
Size: Larval case is typically 5mm to 10mm (0.2 to 0.4 inches) in length.

Natural Habitat
Typically found indoors in dark, undisturbed areas such as closets, under heavy furniture, in carpets, or stored woolens. They prefer humid environments.
Diet & Feeding
The larvae feed on keratin-rich animal fibers including wool, fur, feathers, silk, felt, and sometimes hair or pet dander found in dust.
Behavior Patterns
The larva constructs a portable, silken tube-like case around itself, often incorporating fibers from the material it is eating (which camouflages it). It carries this case as it moves and will eventually pupate inside it. They tend to be elusive and avoid light.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Significant household pest capable of causing extensive damage to clothing, carpets, tapestries, and taxidermy. They do not bite or sting humans and carry no known diseases, but the destruction of fabrics is a major economic nuisance. Benefits: None in a household setting; in nature, they aid in the breakdown of animal organic matter.
