Natural Habitat
Typically found in stored grain products, flour, cereal, and moist domestic environments like pantries or under sink cabinets.
Diet & Feeding
Scavenger; feeds on decaying organic matter, grain, flour, bran, and occasionally other dead insects.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae, known as mealworms, are photophobic and prefer dark, secluded spaces. They undergo a complete metamorphosis including larval, pupal, and adult beetle stages.
Risks & Benefits
Primarily considered a pantry pest that contaminates food sources; however, they are a major benefit as a commercial food source for pets (reptiles/birds) and are being studied for their ability to biodegrade certain plastics.
