Subterranean Termite (Alate/Swarmer)
Scientific Name: Reticulitermes flavipes
Order & Family: Blattodea (Infraorder Isoptera); Rhinotermitidae
Size: Approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length (including wings).

Natural Habitat
In soil or inside damp wood in structures, often following subterranean mud tubes to reach food sources.
Diet & Feeding
Cellulose-based materials, including wood, paper, cardboard, and cotton, which they break down using protozoa in their gut.
Behavior Patterns
Alates or 'swarmers' emerge from established colonies in large numbers during the spring to mate and establish new colonies. They have two pairs of equal-length wings that they shed shortly after landing.
Risks & Benefits
They pose a significant risk of structural damage to homes and buildings. In the ecosystem, they are beneficial as decomposers that recycle dead wood and nutrients back into the soil.
