Drain Fly Larva

Natural Habitat

Inhabits moist environments containing decaying organic matter, most commonly found in gelatinous slime layers inside drains, sewers, septic tanks, and damp soil.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on sludge, nutrient-rich organic matter, algae, bacteria, and fungi found in biofilm inside pipes.

The larvae remain submerged in the slimy biofilm of drains, breathing through a small respiratory tube. They undergo a complete metamorphosis from egg to adult in about 7 to 28 days depending on temperature.

Risks & Benefits

Generally non-biting and not known to transmit human diseases. However, they can be a nuisance in large numbers and may indicate an underlying plumbing issue or buildup of organic debris that needs cleaning.
