Spittlebug

Grassy fields, meadows, gardens, and various plant stems and leaves.

Nymphs and adults feed on plant sap (xylem) from various host plants.

The nymphs produce a frothy, spit-like secretion (the 'cuckoo spit') to protect themselves from predators and desiccation. Adults are known as froghoppers for their jumping ability.

Generally considered a minor garden pest; they can cause slight distortion of leaves but rarely kill plants. They are an important food source for birds and spiders.
