Natural Habitat
Typically found indoors in climate-controlled buildings, often nesting in wall voids, under floors, or behind baseboards near moisture sources.
Diet & Feeding
Omnivorous; they scavenge for sweets, proteins, and fats. In household environments, they are attracted to crumbs, spilled juice, and pet food.
Behavior Patterns
They are known for 'budding,' where a subset of the colony (including a queen) splits off to form a new nest when disturbed. They are active year-round in indoor environments.
Risks & Benefits
They are considered a major indoor pest. They can transmit pathogens like Salmonella and Streptococcus, making them especially dangerous in hospital settings. They provide no significant benefits to human environments.
