They are nocturnal and slow-moving. Their rounded, shiny, red-to-black abdomens and long legs make them resemble large mites or small spiders. They undergo complete metamorphosis.

They are considered a minor domestic pest as they can contaminate stored food, but they do not bite or sting and pose no direct health risk to humans.
