Giant Cactus Longhorn Beetle

Scientific Name: Moneilema gigas

Order & Family: Order: Coleoptera, Family: Cerambycidae

Size: 25 mm to 35 mm (approx. 1 to 1.4 inches)

Giant Cactus Longhorn Beetle

Natural Habitat

Arid desert environments, specifically associated with prickly pear (Opuntia) and cholla (Cylindropuntia) cacti.

Diet & Feeding

Adults feed on the surface of cactus pads; larvae bore into the stems and roots of cactus plants to feed on the internal tissue.

Behavior Patterns

Flightless beetles that mimic noxious darkling beetles (Eleodes) for protection. They are primarily nocturnal or active during the cooler parts of the day, and they lay eggs in the soil or at the base of host cacti.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans. While they can be a minor pest in ornamental cactus gardens, they are a natural part of the desert ecosystem and do not pose a significant threat to overall cactus populations.
