Clover Mite
Bryobia praetiosa
- Order & Family
- Trombidiformes: Tetranychidae
- Size
- 0.75 mm to 0.85 mm
Natural Habitat
Grassy lawns, gardens, and the exterior or interior walls of buildings, particularly in sunny areas.
Diet & Feeding
Herbivorous; they feed on more than 200 species of plants, primarily sucking the sap from grasses, clover, and ornamental flowers.
Behavior Patterns
They are most active in spring and fall during cool weather. They are known for 'migrating' into homes in large numbers. These mites reproduce through parthenogenesis (females produce eggs without mating).
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite humans or pets and do not transmit disease. They are considered a nuisance pest because they can leave red stains on carpets, curtains, and furniture if crushed. In the ecosystem, they serve as a food source for other predatory mites and insects.
